When building slabs that require structural reinforcement, incorporating reinforcement steel fabric and high-tensile steel bars is your best bet. To ensure maximum safety and efficiency, a qualified engineer should oversee the design.
We at BMP offer a wide selection of steel mesh fabrics. You can choose from popular options such as A142 (with 6mm wires), A193 (with 7mm wires), and A252 (with 8mm wires). For 100mm thick slabs in light applications like paths, driveways, and garage bases, A142 mesh works best. For heavier-duty applications needing 150-200mm thick slabs, A252 mesh is usually your go-to, with A193 fitting both scenarios.
Depending on your project’s needs and use, you may opt for a single layer of fabric for light-use applications. For heavier-duty jobs, a double layer of fabric, applied “top and bottom,” provides enhanced stability and durability.
The correct positioning of Reinforcement Steel Fabric is critical for the structure’s stability and longevity. You should always maintain a minimum of 50mm cover over the steel reinforcement, from all sides. To help with this, BMP offers specialized spacers like Hystools, Wire ring spacers, concrete bar spacers, and Grade Plate Spacers. Designed for use with mesh fabric sheets, these spacers are placed roughly every 600mm. This setup supports the fabric without allowing any sagging.
BMP provides a range of concrete spacers, including square bars for mesh reinforcement. These are available in 1 metre lengths, ranging from 20mm up to 100mm. These bars can be laid directly on the formwork or ground floor sub-base before adding the reinforcement cage, which reduces fixing costs. They also serve as kickers and formwork spacers, providing versatility.
Our double and triple cover concrete spacers have a flat base, designed for use on both vertical and horizontal applications. This design feature gives extra support and stability, particularly in situations where the reinforcement’s weight is high.
